A Better Use

Thank you for your review of safety issues that have dragged on for years now at the Maidstone Gun Club in East Hampton [“Work To Do,” Editorial, April 17]. Hopefully, some common-sense restrictions will be enforced if it is reopened — but it is hard to know, given the lack of transparency from the town officials.

However, it is not clear why this facility should need 97 acres, and that should be adjusted if a new lease is signed. Various studies have shown that it should need only 10 to 30 acres, depending on what type of operations are allowed in the future. The remaining land should be put to better use.

A community solar facility has been considered for that area for over a decade now, and the town administration should finally move in that direction. It could generate 10 times the revenue per acre than the gun club and also play an important role in helping the town reach its lofty sustainability goals that they are woefully behind on — according to their own environmental report released last year, the town emits more greenhouse gas emissions than a decade ago, when they pledged to totally eliminate them.

Sadly, climate change is not waiting for local politicians to get their act together.
