Student Council Hits the Ice

The Springs School Student Council went on a field trip to the Southampton Ice Skating Rink on Thursday, February 27.

The council is made up of 22 middle school students who have specific responsibilities to help set a positive tone in the school. For example, the Student Council members help fundraise for school dances and are in charge of coming up with themes for dances. They also organize “Pizza Fridays,” which means they collect money from students and help hand out pizza when it arrives at the school.

Student Council members also lead the Pledge of Allegiance over the loudspeaker each morning. After the pledge, they inform students of upcoming events that week and acknowledge birthdays.

Owen McCormack is the teacher in charge of the Student Council. He said the field trip was a reward for all of the hard work and great effort the council members do for the school.

The students were allowed to bring their own skates, if they wanted to, rather than use the rental skates. Additionally, students brought a change of clothes in case they got wet from falling on the ice.

After they ice skated for a little bit, they ordered something they wanted to eat from the menu. Most kids chose hamburgers, chicken tenders or grilled cheese. While eating lunch, they watched the Zamboni clean the ice.

Then, after their meal, the students went back on the bus and headed to school in time for their seventh period classes.
